Mapped Slum

Mapped Slum > Google

Google launched a contest called Google Creative Sandbox, where participants had to create an original idea that used one of the brand's products to help the Brazilian population in some way. Our proposition was to use Google Maps to map out the “pacified favelas” of Rio de Janeiro, something impossible to happen before the pacification* process because criminals could be found more easily. Our idea was to increase the safety of these areas and show other interesting points in these communities. More than 5000 ideas were entered and we (myself and my partner Thiago Ferreira) won second place in the contest.

NOTE: Pacification is a process which consisted in sweeping the criminals of the main favelas in Rio de Janeiro and then placing police stations 24 hours per day in the main entrances and exits of these areas.
